Spectroscopic Centre of Excellence
Originally from New Zealand, Dr Tony Betts moved to Ireland in 1998 where he joined Forbairt, now Enterprise Ireland, as a corrosion scientist. In 2004 he was assigned to Dublin Institute of Technology where he undertook industrial consultancy work together with lecturing and co-supervision of several postgraduate research students. He was one of three people responsible for establishing the Centre for Research in Engineering and Surface Technology (CREST) in the FOCAS Institute. This centre is now supported by Enterprise Ireland through their Advanced Research Enhancement scheme.
After transferring to the Research Support Unit of the Directorate of Research and Enterprise in April 2007, he became a joint Head of Research and Development Services, with special responsibility for assisting researchers with applications to nationally-funded grant schemes. He is still actively engaged in applied electrochemistry research in DIT. Current research topics include: corrosion science; fuel cell electrocatalysis; nanomaterials in electrochemical sensors; and applications of conducting polymer materials. Some of his students have recently completed their research on 'Silver-platinum alloys in medical devices and hygienic coatings', 'Photo-assisted fuel cell' and 'Noise abatement in the field of applied acoustics'.
