Microscopical Society of Ireland Symposium hosted by the Focas Institute, 7-9 September

The Microscopical Society of Ireland (MSI) is an all – island society which aims to foster discussion and co-operation between those who use microscopy. The primary forum for discussion is the annual symposium which is held in one of the academic institutions on the island of Ireland.
This year it was held at the Focas Institute, DIT, and organised by Louisa Hartnett,
Mary McNamara, Eoghan Ó Faoláin, Aidan Meade, Hugh Byrne, Martin Wyer and Fiona Lyng. 65 delegates from all over Ireland attended the Symposium - TCD, UCD, NUI Galway,
NUI Maynooth, University of Limerick, RCSI, the Mater Hospital, QUB, University of Ulster and of course DIT.

The scientific programme comprised three main sessions; Materials Science and Microscopy, Life Science and Microscopy and New Frontiers in Microscopy. A total of 14 contributed oral presentations and 30 poster presentations were made over the three days. Of these,
12 presentations were from DIT staff and students.
Five keynote speakers gave entertaining and informative talks; Pamela Hamer, Forensic Alliance UK; Pr. Jean Yves Buffiere, INSA Lyon; Dr David Cottell, UCD; Dr Takeshi Fukuma, TCD and Dr Gerwin Puppels, Erasmus University Rotterdam.
